Bringing everything home (part two)
The next morning we went out to get coffee, donuts, and UHaul. The guys at the UHaul place? Yeah, they were rude. Can’t take a joke for nuthin. From ten to two, we packed and loaded and loaded and packed and by 2:30 the door to the UHaul was closed and we were done. J decided to take off with the UHaul since we didn’t have any place to park it anyway. The rest of us showered and got all of our things together. My uncle picked Ruthie and I up and took us to the nursing home where my grandmother is. What a miserable place that was. How did my grandmother get so old? This was another clear sign that I do not visit enough. After visiting with my grandmother, my uncle took Ruthie and I out to dinner, which was nice. The best part was when my Uncle asked Ruthie what her plans were after graduation and she told him she was thinking about going to a trade school in Houston to be a (get this) diesel mechanic. I get MAJOR points for not spewing my drink everywhere. When he asked her why, she said it sounded exciting and “for lots of reasons” – she couldn’t name a single one! lol. We came back to the apartment and did one last run through before heading out to meet the guy that Veronique was with when she died. He took us to the parking lot where it happened. There was still a mark on the wall where the motorcycle hit and we left flowers there. Is it weird that I didn’t feel anything there? It was just a place. Just like her apartment was just a place after all of her things were on their way back to San Antonio. We talked to the guy for a little while and then we hit the road. On the way back, I wasn’t driving so I –ahem- altered my reality a little. I haven’t done that in such a VERY long time. At 2:18 am, I pulled into my driveway.
Yesterday we did a lot of cleaning and rearranging to prepare for the furniture that Veronique’s parents were bringing and then I hit the hay. It was a long ass weekend. From the time I left my house to the time I was back it was thirty two hours!
I just hung up the phone “It’s good to have you back in [town]” Cute-boy tells me. It’s good to be home. My daughters asked me last night if I was leaving on Friday again. No. I told them that I wasn’t taking any more trips for awhile.
Her things are here and I feel better about that. I feel like she is home.

"I just got done reading the history lessons on your blog (yes, I've been lurking on your blog). All the respect I had for you...has increased, like, tenfold. I don't think I could have done it. To go through what you have and not only still be able to discuss it with such wit and poise, but also to raise those three gorgeous girls. You are truly an inspiration. You are honestly one of the strongest people I have ever known, either online or IRL. Thank you so much." -Stef
