One of the things I am always forgetting to do and trying to get better at is UNPLUGGING EVERYTHING. Things that aren't on shouldn't be plugged in because they still leech electricity. And what bigger waste is there than things that are off using electricity they don't even NEED?
Unplug your tv. Unplug your cell phone charger. Unplug your computer. Unplug your toaster. Unplug your coffee maker. Unplug every thing.
What a pain in the ass.
Pain in the ass is better than pain to the planet but still.
So, how jazzed was I to see this?
"Green Home introduces a surge protector that not only offers excellent power surge protection and noise filtering, but lowers electric bills! When devices, such as computers, are plugged into the control outlet, the power strip is able to 'sense' the flow of electrical current through the strip's control outlet. This unique feature enables the Smart Strip to turn off selected equipment when its not in use, saving you money and time!
Amazing uh? So, how does it work? A small electronic device inside the Smart Strip monitors the current on a single outlet. The computer is plugged into that single outlet. When the computer is finished shutting down, the current draw from the computer drops to its idle current -- and the Smart Strip senses the current change, automatically shutting off all of the computer peripherals.
The Smart Strip Power Strip is the only surge protector on the market today with energy saving electronics.
Available with 7 or 10 outlets. The 7 outlet version has 1 Control Outlet, 2 Constant Hot Outlets and 4 Switched Outlets. The 10 outlet version has 1 Control Outlet, 3 Constant Hot Outlets, and 6 Switched Outlets.
The Smart Strip has three different outlets:
The Control Outlet: This is the 'master switch' for devices plugged into the Switched Outlets (see below). When the device plugged into the control outlet is turned on or off, the devices plugged into the switched outlets will turn on or off accordingly.
The Constant Hot Outlets: These outlets fuction just like the outlets on a regular power strip; they remain powered as long as the power switch is on, and are not switched by the Control Outlet.
The Automatically Switched Outlets: These outlets are controlled by the device plugged into the Control Outlet. Devices plugged into these outlets will automatically turn on or off when the device plugged into the control outlet is turned on or off.
How much can you possibly save by using this device? Here's the math:
Approximately 15%, or $300, of the $2,000 an average American household spends on household energy costs goes to power consumer electronics. The US Department of Energy estimates that 75% of the electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off! Assuming that 2/3 of these products could be more properly managed by plugging them into a Smart Strip, and that the resulting savings could cut the 75% of waste in half, this results in an approximate dollar savings of $150 per year. However, certain non-consumer electronics may also benefit from being plugged into the Smart Strip, so the overall savings for your home could be higher. "
